The cap is gone
OpenAI has removed limits on text chats for free ChatGPT users. Not raised. Removed.
The announcement landed on 6 August. Free and Go users now get unlimited text conversations, running on a new default model called GPT-5.6 Luna, which replaces GPT-5.5. Free users also get a "Think" button that lets them ask for deeper reasoning on a harder question. Plus and Pro users move to GPT-5.6 Sol, with a "thinking slider" that dials how much reasoning power a query gets.
OpenAI says its internal testing showed GPT-5.6 Luna makes 62 per cent fewer factual errors than GPT-5.5 Instant, and that Sol makes 68 per cent fewer than its predecessor. Those are the company's own numbers, not independently verified, so treat them as direction rather than gospel.
Limits have not disappeared entirely. Files, images, voice and image generation still carry restrictions on the free tier. Text is the thing that went uncapped.
Scale is the part worth pausing on. ChatGPT reported 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 and has been reported at or approaching one billion weekly users since. A product used by roughly one in eight people on earth just made its core function free and unmetered.
Why a company gives away its main product
Two reasons, and neither is charity.
The first is competition. Free, capable AI is now table stakes. Every major lab is fighting for default habit, and habit is worth more than a monthly fee from a casual user who was never going to upgrade anyway.
The second is data and distribution. The winner in this market is not the model with the best benchmark score. It is the one people open without thinking. Removing friction from the free tier is how you buy that.
The strategic read is simple. Generic intelligence is being commoditised on purpose.
What this actually does to businesses
Three things change quickly.
Thin wrappers are in trouble. If your product is mostly a nice interface over a general model, doing summarising, rewriting, basic drafting or generic Q and A, you are now competing with an unlimited free version that a billion people already have open in another tab. That is not a pricing problem you can discount your way out of.
Customer expectations reset. Your customers are now using a fast, unlimited, fairly accurate assistant every day, at no cost. Then they hit your contact form and wait eighteen hours for a reply. The gap between those two experiences is what they will remember about your business.
Staff AI use goes from occasional to constant. When usage was metered, people rationed it. Uncapped free access means AI use inside your business will rise whether or not you have a policy. Now is a sensible time to have one, particularly around what customer or financial data goes into a public chatbot.
