Building AI models grew 21%. Using them grew 178%

Everyone wants to learn how to build AI models. Almost nobody is paying for it.
Upwork published its In-Demand Skills report covering 1 January to 31 December 2025, measured against real completed jobs and real freelancer earnings in the US market. Only skills that cleared $100,000 in aggregate earnings made the list. This is not a survey of what people say they want. It is a record of what money moved toward.
Here is the line that should change your plan.
Generative AI Modeling grew 21%. AI Integration grew 178%.
Building the model is not the job. Wiring the model into a business that already exists is the job.

Across the whole marketplace, skills explicitly tied to applying AI grew 109% year over year.
What this means if you are trying to get paid this quarter
The top of that list is not research. It is craft. AI video editing grew more than three times faster than anything in the modelling category, and it is a skill you can be dangerous at in a month, not a PhD.
AI Integration at 178% is the quiet winner. It means somebody with a real business, real customers and a real mess of spreadsheets needs someone to connect a model to their workflow without breaking anything. That person is not looking for a researcher. They are looking for someone who can ship.
